Virtue.

These are things that not many people seem to care about anymore. The zeitgeist is currently dishonesty. Greed. Lying, deception. Profit at the expense of others.

I had the pleasure and the luck to meet a man that had more positive virtues than all the people born in the past 40 years I've met, combined.

He was a CB or a Marine construction position, on the front lines. Under constant threat, he lead construction to supply the Marines an extremely short distance away. Lines, bridges, structures.. He did it all.
He was and still is the only male I've ever met in my life that I would consider a true gentleman. The very definition of an outstanding human being.

He came from a time where the aforementioned positive virtues were held in high regard. These days, one would be lucky to encounter any human possessing even a majority of such attributes. He was a man you could only dream of being like. He was in the care of my neighbours, and those neighbours just happened to be family (the husband of the woman in the household married into the family), until Vernon had to go into assisted living due to the progression of his long-term memory loss and increased pain incurred by the Parkinson's.

My only single regret is that I never got to see him since he was placed into assisted living about 2 months ago. But every single time I got to see him next door, 3-6 times a month, I praised him for being such a wonderful person. And he commended me as well, since I'm not like my peers here. I'm not a crack addict, I abhor lying, I strive to be a good person. Good people are hard to find in Louisiana, or basically anywhere for that matter.

When my neighbours were out of town, I would go and take care of him. He considered me a grandchild of his, and cared greatly for me as well. He constantly asked of my well-being, and expressed sympathy for my fibromyalgia. Alongside his godlike kindness and respect, he also had Parkinsons'- yet he always had a smile on his face and a great sense of humour and self-respect. Retained a good amount of independence.
I knew him for over a year, and every day I was blessed to spend with him made me a better person.
Ever since I was a child, I severely disliked the idea of a role model and avidly avoided adopting one- but he swiftly became mine. And he still is.
This is just another bitter lesson in my life to remember that good never stays. It's just life. It's something I abhor, cannot deny nor escape.
But if there is anything I can pass on to anyone in this little website of crude flash, cock jokes 24/7, and hentai games, it is to be like Vernon. Whenever I would leave to go back to my house, he would kiss my hand, my cheek, and give me a giant hug. Everytime I left. And it breaks my heart I have no-one in my life like that anymore.

He passed away early this morning. I'm going to sew a patch/emblem into one of my favourite hats, and emblazon his rank, regiment, and name below said patch.
I guess I'll be mourning for a while. Quite a while.

No sympathy/awww/etc comments unless you really need to put those here. I just needed to share this. And I hope any random person that peruses this will change for the better. Don't be a sheep in the herd. Be a freakin' human, for crying out loud. And if you do that, there's a chance you'll change others too, even in a small way. It's better than nothing.

In other news, I finally hacked & modded both my Zen (custom animated Matrix startup, custom themes) and my phone (Motorola W510, Narwhals text message ringtone and Bill Nye theme default ringtone.)

My immunology referral went through! Sure, it took 13 months and almost monthly calls to my doctor and the hospital my referral was aimed at, more specifically weekly calls from me to my doctor to get my doctor to call THOSE doctors and they finally sent the referral information in the mail. Just waiting on that and we can get the bloodwork started and I'll be able to get my life back in order.
I'm so fucking happy about the prospect that I'm making a fucking newspost about it. So, yeah.

Let this be your lesson, kids- if you have a life-threatening disease... um.. don't get sick in the first place?

Oh and as a sidenote, I'm having fun with Dragonica. Been a couple weeks now and I can solidly say, yeah. It's something to play when my RA3 addiction isn't rearing its head.

My cousin's son died of Swine Flu Type A -and- Type B. My cousin, whom I grew up with through childhood, teenage years, into adulthood.....
